$13,000 at 10th Annual Assumption Life Race!
More than 200 participants ran and walked the 10th annual Assumption Life Race held in Dieppe this past Saturday, June 5. A total of $13,000 was raised to go toward two major causes: the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute and the Pediatric unit at Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont Regional Hospital.
"This year, Premier Shawn Graham kicked off the 5K and 10K runs; he even ran the 1K with the children’s, said Guylaine Gauvin, director of the Assumption Financial Centre in Dieppe and chair of the race’s organizing committee, on Saturday. I have to say that since we founded this event, the support we’ve received from the runners, sponsors, volunteers and entire community has far exceeded expectations. Just think: counting the money from today’s race, over the past 10 years we’ve raised more than $85,000. It’s fantastic!"
After taking part in the race once, it is easy to understand why runners keep coming back year after year. Over the years, this sport event has become a highly regarded family event involving the entire community in the objective of raising funds for causes that affect us all in one way or another. "Everyone has a relative or friend who’s had to live with this disease," explained Ms. Gauvin. "I’m amazed by the incredible courage and strength of people with cancer, and I’m certainly not the only one. I also know that a good number of the runners coming back every year to take part in our race are doing this not just for their own sense of achievement but also to honour and celebrate the courage of people fighting cancer."
She added that by serving as the event’s honorary co-chairs, Chris Collins and Lisette Richard, the parents of Sean Collins, remind both the organizers and the runners of the real reason for taking part in the race. "It takes more than 50 volunteers to see this event through from the starting area to the water point to the finish line," stated Ms. Gauvin. "We do it because we want to make a difference. We sincerely believe that supporting cancer research helps to save lives."
This year, $2,000 of the funds raised from the race was shared with the pediatric department at Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont Regional Hospital, in memory of Sean Collins, who passed away from cancer in July 2007 at the young age of 13.
