Assumption Life Invites the Public to Join in its Recycling Efforts in Support of Schools and Orphanages in Haiti!
|
Assumption Life is calling on the citizens of Greater Moncton to take part in a mega-recycling project in support of children in Haiti. The New Brunswick-based company is joining forces with Green Standards and ONEXONE to equip schools and orphanages in Haiti left devastated by the violent earthquake that struck that country in January. In addition to giving office equipment, Assumption Life is accepting donations of school and office supplies from now through July 21 from those interested in taking part in this "green" initiative.
"Assumption Life will be covering all shipping costs for delivering the supplies collected to the warehouses of Green Standards," stated Rachelle Gagnon, director of human resources at Assumption Life. "Green Standards will then be responsible for forwarding them to ONEXONE, an international charity, which will distribute them among orphanages and schools in Haiti."
As the current school year draws to a close, Ms. Gagnon encourages people "to drop off any used school supplies to us for recycling that their children won’t be using again, such as pens, pencils, markers, crayons, colour pencils, binders, book bags, lunch boxes, pencil cases, notebooks, loose leaf, etc. People can also drop off any extra office supplies that they have at home or purchase new ones to donate."
This campaign is the second to date undertaken by Assumption Life and its employees on behalf of the earthquake victims in Haiti. In January of this year, the company and its employees raised a total of $7,870 in donations for Haiti.
Ms. Gagnon noted that although media coverage of the disaster in Haiti may have waned, need remains urgent in the country as it tries desperately to rebuild. "Living in our own relative comfort, it’s easy to forget the daily struggles faced by countless other people, both here at home and around the world, just to survive," she said. "Many children in Haiti just don’t have access to many things that we take for granted, like housing, food, health care and education. Through this small-scale initiative, we’re able to help out on two fronts: recycling and supporting children who are in great need."
People seeking to take part in this collective support effort are invited to drop off their donations of supplies at Assumption Life’s reception desk on the main floor of Assumption Place at 770 Main Street. Second Agreement with Green Standards
In 2009, in addition to its many other environmental initiatives, Assumption Life was one of the first companies in Atlantic Canada to participate in a "green" project with Green Standards Ltd. Under this initiative, the company turned over for recycling and redistribution to charity organizations 3.2 tons of used desks and other furniture that would otherwise have ended up in landfills.
For additional information, visit the websites of ONEXONE at www.onexone.organd Green Standards at www.corp-greenstandards.com.
Assumption Life takes its social responsibility very seriously, and its employees have a long tradition of sharing with their communities. Assumption Life’s employees and financial advisors have shown great dedication and generosity in their volunteer support of organizations, including not only the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute but also the United Way and numerous other worthy causes. More than $350,000 is returned every year to the community through these fund-raising efforts.
