Scholarships

Awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the masters or doctoral program at the Université de Moncton, Moncton Campus. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must also:

• Be a resident of the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec or Ontario;
• Have strong research skills and a satisfactory academic record;
• Demonstrate financial need;
• Demonstrate leadership skills through their involvement in their community in extracurricular, athletic, cultural or other activities.

The recipient is chosen by a selection committee from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the Université de Moncton and confirmed by the Assumption Life Foundation chair or secretary. Please submit your application to the faculty of Graduate Studies and Reasearch.

To qualify for the Denis Losier Scholarship, candidates must:

• Demonstrate academic excellence with at least a 3.5 overall average;
• Be a graduate student, preferably;
• Be registered at Université Ste-Anne or Université de Moncton as a full-time student; and
• Stand out for their leadership qualities and be known for their commitment to social and community issues.

All candidate applications must be received no later than October 15th of the current year and should include the following:

• Your name, address and telephone number;
• Your most recent transcript;
• Two reference letters;
• A written statement that details your social and community commitment, your leadership abilities, your course of study, your career plan, as well as the reasons why you believe this scholarship should be awarded to you.

History
Denis Losier was born on June 14, 1953, and studied economics at university. In 1975, he graduated with a master’s in economics from University of Western Ontario. After starting out as an economist with the federal Department of Regional Industrial Expansion, he became president and CEO of the Société des Acadiens et Acadiennes du Nouveau-Brunswick. In 1998, he made the move into politics and was elected as the Liberal member of parliament for Tracadie. He held the position of Minister for various departments: Fisheries and Aquaculture (1989-1991), Commerce and Technology and Tourism, Recreation and Heritage, which would become Economic Development and Tourism (1991-1994).

In 1994, Mr. Losier became president and CEO of Assumption Life insurance and financial services, along with its real estate subsidiaries and Placement Louisbourg Inc. He held this position until his retirement in 2013. Under his presidency, Assumption Life shifted from a company focused on the Atlantic Provinces to a company doing business across Canada.

Mr. Losier has been a member of many boards of directors, including, as of his retirement from Assumption Life: Canadian National, NAV Canada, Enbridge Gas New Brunswick, the Security Intelligence Review Committee, Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association and Invest NB.

The Fernand Landry non-renewable Scholarship was established in 2003, the same year Assumption Life celebrated its 100^th anniversary, to honour the outstanding contributions of Fernand Landry (1947 –2000) to the development and vitality of the Acadian people and the Francophone community in Canada.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

• Be completing a bachelor's or master's program at the Université de Moncton;
• Be entering a masters or doctoral program as a full-time student at a Canadian university;
• Have a cumulative average of at least 3.5 during the university program;
• Have demonstrated strong social or community involvement;
• Have shown leadership skills in their university studies and/or outside employment;
• Originate from the Atlantic Provinces; and
• Intend to remain in Atlantic Canada to work after completing their studies.

Applications:
Application for the non-renewable Fernand Landry scholarship are to be forwarded to Assumption Life Foundation on or before July 30th and should include the following:

• Applicant's name, address and telephone number;
• Up-to-date academic transcript;
• Written recommendations from at least 2 professors; and
• A brief essay by the applicant outlining:
  • social and community involvement,
  • intended course of study,
  • career plans, and
  • reasons why he or she deserves the bursary.

History:
Fernand Landry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Université de Moncton, a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of New Brunswick, as well as a Master of Law degree from Harvard University. After teaching law at the University of New Brunswick, he and his wife, Aldéa, along with fellow lawyer Pierre P. Tremblay, founded the law firm of Tremblay, Landry, Landry. He was subsequently asked to coordinate the setup of the Université de Moncton’s new law faculty. Later in his career, he served as deputy minister to Premier Frank McKenna.

During his tenure as the dean of the faculty of law of the Université de Moncton, he oversaw the construction of the Pavillon Adrien-J.-Cormier. He was subsequently appointed Vice-President, Administration and Human Resources, and, in 1999, became the director general of the 8^th Francophone Summit. During the course of his career, he also served as president of the Société Nationale de l'Acadie, of the Law Society of New Brunswick and of the Canadian Court Challenges Program, as well as chairman of the board of Assumption Life.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

• Be Francophone and from the Atlantic provinces;
• Be graduating from a secondary school program during the year scholarship is awarded;
• Be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the Université de Moncton, Moncton Campus;
• Demonstrate financial need; and
• Have an excellent academic record.

The recipient is chosen by the scholarship selection committee of the Université de Moncton, Moncton Campus. Please submit your application with the University's Student Services.

History:
Gilbert Finn was born in 1920 in Inkerman Ferry, New Brunswick. In 1944, he obtained a B.A. from Laval University. He married Jeannine Boudreau in 1948, and they had nine children. Throughout his long career, he held the following positions: with the Mouvement coopératif, from 1947 to 1950; CEO of Assumption Life, from 1962 to 1981; President of the Université de Moncton, from 1981 to 1985; and Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick, from 1987 to 1994.

He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1974 and became an Officer in 1979. Throughout his career, he was involved in various organizations, among them the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital, the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council, the Order of Jacques Cartier and the Conseil de la vie française. His autobiography, Fais quelque chose!, was published in 2000.

This scholarship was established to encourage youth attending the school that bears his name who excel in sports while also maintaining exceptional academic performance. The recipient is selected by the administration of École Louis J. Robichaud. Please contact the school administration for more information regarding this scholarship.

Louis Joseph Robichaud was born in 1925 in Saint-Antoine, New Brunswick. Better known as P’tit Louis, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Collège Sacré-Cœur in 1947. He went on to study political science, a subject he enjoyed from an early age, then economics at Laval University. He briefly practiced law in Richibucto.

At the young age of 27 he embarked on his political career, becoming the MLA for the riding of Kent County. He became Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick in 1958 and led it to victory in 1960. He was Premier of New Brunswick until 1970, a period of three terms. He played an important role in the promotion of linguistic equality and his government passed the Official Languages Act, making New Brunswick Canada’s only officially bilingual province at the time. He also made a significant contribution to the French-language school system and the founding of the Université de Moncton.

In 1973, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada, where he remained until his retirement in 2000. He died in 2005 following a brief illness.

The Louisbourg Investments $1,500 non-renewable scholarship also includes one day of job shadowing at Louisbourg Investments Inc. with potential future recruitment.

Criteria :

• Be in your 3rd of 4th year as a full-time Finance student (Business Faculty) in a Canadian university in Fall of the current year
• Have an overall average of at least 3.5 in your program of study
• Demonstrate leadership skills
• Include a letter of reference with your application

Created in 1991, Louisbourg Investments Inc., a subsidiary owned by Assumption Life at 70%, provides investment management and financial planning for retirement plans, mutual funds, insurance companies and individual portfolio holders. With offices in Moncton and Halifax, it is one of the few investment management firms established in the Atlantic Provinces.

In order to qualify for the Lorraine LeBlanc Scholarship, you must:

• Have a “LeBlanc” surname;
• Be registered as a full-time student at a college or university in New Brunswick;
• Demonstrate above average educational achievement during the last year of study;
• Require financial assistance in order to pursue your post-secondary education; and
• Submit your application by September 30^th of the current year.

History:
Born October 31, 1922, in Bathurst, Lorraine LeBlanc was the daughter of the late Philippe and Lucie (Hébert) LeBlanc. A retired nurse and hairdresser, she was a selfless, energetic and hard worker, with a fiery personality. Her numerous friends would also say she loved to laugh and had a “joie de vivre”. She enjoyed travelling all over the world.

A smart and well-read person, she believed in the importance of education. Her father was an Acadian leader who saw great things for the Acadian population. For these reasons, Ms LeBlanc wished to leave a scholarship as her legacy. She passed away on January 7, 2012, at the age of 89.

The First Nations scholarship is designed to provide financial support to indigenous students, residing in New Brunswick, in the pursuit of their academic dreams. It can be used to cover tuition fees, books and supplies, and other expenses related to higher education. This initiative is part of Assumption Life and its Foundation's ongoing efforts to support native communities, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation's call to action.

To qualify for this scholarship candidates must:

• Be an Indigenous, Métis or Inuit student;
• Be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada;
• Be between the ages of 17 and 29;
• Have a permanent address in New Brunswick;
• Be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary educational institution in Canada (university, vocational school, college)^₁;
• Be enrolled in a program of at least two years' duration.

1. Canadian educational institutions recognized as qualified to award a provincial diploma or their affiliated institutions (e.g. vocational schools, colleges, universities). University preparatory programs, regardless of province or territory, are not eligible.

Applications:
Applications for the First Nations scholarship must be received by the Assumption Life Foundation no later than May 30 and must include the following elements:   

1. Personal statement: A text of approximately 1,000 words describing the candidate's interests, future goals, financial needs and ties to the indigenous community. Must include answers to the following questions:  

• Tell us about yourself and your lived experience as an indigenous person?  
• How have you been active in your indigenous community (e.g., your home community, the community you belong to at university, etc.) and/or in your family? 
• For those of you who are in the process of reconnecting with your community, how are you going about it?  
• How has your involvement in your native community helped shape the person you are today?  
• What do you want to do in life after graduating from post-secondary studies?  

2. Validation of Indigeneity: Proof of indigenous identity must be included in the application submission and can be made in one of two formats: 

• Letter of Endorsement: Completed by an indigenous community leader, elder or mentor who knows the applicant. The form must be dated within one year of the application deadline and include the reference's contact information and signature.
• Proof of indigenous identity:
  • A valid Certificate of Indian Status, Status Card or Band Membership Card;  
  • Group letter confirming status;  
  • A Métis membership card or letter issued by Métis National Council, Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, Métis Nation organizations of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, and/or Manitoba Métis Federation;
  • A certified copy of a Nunavut Trust Certificate Card or Inuit Beneficiary Card;
  • A letter of support from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) or Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CINRAC) or Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated;
  • For non-status people, a letter of support from a First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) organization.

3. Letters of recommendation: Two (2) letters of recommendation completed by a teacher, instructor, school administrator, employer or community member. The reference must know the candidates academic background, community contributions and involvement in volunteer or extracurricular activities. The reference must support the candidate's post-secondary studies and future goals. The letter must be dated within one year of the application deadline and must include the reference's contact information and signature.

4. Transcript: Applicants for the scholarship must include one or more transcripts of their most recent and available grades.
